  • The Mathematics Extension 1 program covers all Mathematics Advanced content and extends into five additional topic areas:

    • Polynomials

    • Further Trigonometry

    • Binomial Theorem

     The course develops advanced algebraic reasoning, proof techniques and extended calculus skills, preparing students for the demands of HSC Mathematics Extension 1 and beyond.

  • Functions and Further Functions – Inverse functions; parametric equations; composite and reciprocal functions; graph transformations using function notation; solving absolute value and rational inequalities.

    Polynomials – Polynomial division; remainder and factor theorems; roots, multiplicity and graphing; sums and products of zeroes of quadratic, cubic and quartic polynomials.

    Trigonometry and Further Trigonometry – Unit circle definitions and identities; sum, difference and double angle formulas; auxiliary angle method; 3D trigonometry; trigonometric equations over restricted domains.

    Permutations and Combinations – Ordered and unordered selections; restrictions and circular arrangements; combinatorial identities; probability problems using permutations and combinations.

    Binomial Theorem – Pascal's triangle and symmetry; deriving and applying the binomial theorem; proving identities using binomial coefficients.

  • Students will:

    • Develop advanced algebraic and analytical skills that extend well beyond the Mathematics Advanced course.

    • Build rigorous knowledge of polynomial theory, combinatorics and extended trigonometric methods.

    • Strengthen proof-writing and mathematical reasoning skills critical for success in Extension 1 assessments.

    • Establish a strong calculus and algebraic foundation to support future success in HSC Mathematics Extension 1 and 2.
