Year 11 - English Advanced

  • This comprehensive Year 11 English Advanced program follows the NESA HSC syllabus, encompassing all four key modules:

    • Common Module: Reading to Write

    • Module A: Narratives that Shape Our World

    • Module B: Critical Study of Literature

    Each module is designed to balance deep literary analysis with practical writing development. The course develops analytical, compositional and reflective skills across a range of modes, forms and genres — from close reading and critical essay writing to creative composition and examination technique.

  • Across the modules, students will:

    Reading to Write – Reading as a writer; literary, visual and rhetorical techniques; genre, form and audience; thematic and stylistic connections; creative and reflective composition; short answer exam skills.

    Narratives that Shape Our World – The role of narrative in shaping identity; structure, perspective and world-building; representation of power, culture and history; intertextuality, archetypes and comparative essay writing.

    Critical Study of Literature – Close reading of a prescribed literary text; literary features, symbolism and thematic resonance; authorial intent and audience response; developing a personal reading; analytical paragraph and essay planning.

  • Students will:

    • Develop advanced skills in analysing literary, visual and multimodal texts across modes and mediums.

    • Build a versatile writing repertoire spanning creative, critical, discursive and reflective composition.

    • Engage closely with prescribed texts and develop evidence-based personal interpretations.

    • Master exam techniques including short answer analysis, timed extended essay writing and creative reflection responses.
