Year 11 - Chemistry

  • The Chemistry program is structured into three NESA modules:

    • Module 1: Properties and Structure of Matter

    • Module 2: Introduction to Quantitative Chemistry

    • Module 3: Reactive Chemistry

    The course combines laboratory investigation, data analysis and quantitative problem-solving to explore how matter is structured, measured and transformed through chemical processes.

  • Properties and Structure of Matter – Separation of mixtures; atomic structure and electron configuration; periodic table trends in atomic radius, ionisation energy and electronegativity; ionic, covalent and metallic bonding; intermolecular forces.

    Introduction to Quantitative Chemistry – Conservation of mass and stoichiometry; the mole concept; concentration, dilution and solution preparation; properties and gas laws of ideal gases.

    Reactive Chemistry – Types of chemical reactions including synthesis, decomposition, combustion, precipitation and redox; metal activity series; rates of reaction and collision theory; endothermic and exothermic energy changes.

  • Students will:

    • Develop a thorough understanding of atomic structure, periodic trends and the principles underlying chemical bonding.

    • Build quantitative problem-solving skills across stoichiometry, concentration and ideal gas law calculations.

    • Gain hands-on laboratory experience through investigations in bonding, molar ratios, precipitation and calorimetry.

    • Understand the energy and rate factors that drive chemical reactions, with applications in industry and medicine.
