The Bible of HSC English Creative Writing
Step by Step instruction from Ninety Plus Education Centre
-How to accumulate vocabulary
-How to choose writing books
-How to use books effectively
Ninety Plus is here to recommend two best choice for students:
Young Writers Showcase 16, and The Best of Writeon 2016
These two English writing books have collected the best award-winning works in each grade, demonstrating the highest level of students’ writing.
Young Writers Showcase 16 collects the highest scoring creative writing of the 2016 HSC Stage 6 exam. It is suitable for students from Yr 7-Yr12.
The followings are the best ways to use this book:
(1) Accumulate Band 6 vocabulary:
One of the keys to high score composition is the use of advanced vocabulary. It is more interesting to learn vocabulary in peers’ compositions than to recite a list of difficult words in a tedious way.
Let's look at an example in the book:
“A swathe of iridescent bubbles streams across his skins and fans out like a shimmering cloak of effervescence.”
In this sentence, students can learn two Band 6 words:
High scoring expression: Iridescent
Low scoring expression: colourful
High scoring expression: effervescence
Low scoring expression: bubbling
By learning from high-scoring essays, students can learn how to use these words correctly in sentences.
(2) Learn to avoid Cliché
For example: to describe the coldness of winter, the high-scoring student author writes:
“It jolts you awake in the morning, leaves you clinging to the coffee mug, begging for warmth, as the clock moves alarmingly close to your time to leave.”
There is no lengthy expression, but only precise verbs and vivid such as "jolts You Awake", "clinging to the coffee mug". The coldness of winter is effectively depicted.
Students can summarize expressions like this in each piece of work and classify them according to different genres and form their own high-scoring corpus.
(3) Learn to write in different styles and genres
The collection covers the various writing styles and genres required by HSC, including short stories, poems, scripts, critical responses, etc.
Students can classify the essays according to the subject matter and study for:
# structural designs under the same category
# Compare and contrast different writing styles in the same genre
(4) Learn how to develop ideas
Many students encounter problems such as lack of inspiration, depth and creativity.
This collection of essays is a model for students to learn from ideas, to help them open up new perspectives, and to learn how to make an instant of inspiration into a clear and creative text.
(5) Learn to practise writing
Writing is a skill based on practice, and there are rules to follow.
The first step in improving the practice of writing is to learn from others.
Steps of practicing writing use high-scoring works:
1. Understand the concept, structure, plot and expression of the work (including Grammar and vocabulary)
2. Apply the idea, structure and plot of the work to your own work but make some modifications or additions to the presentation or content.
3. Maintain the idea and structure of the work, reshape the plot and expression
4. Choose your own idea, plot and expression, referring to the structure of the sample work, and then create your independent work.
(6) A quality reading material
This collection, rich and interesting, is also a high-quality extracurricular reading. While enjoying reading, you can develop a clear understanding of “good writing” looks like.
We recommend The Best of Writeon 2016 for students from Yr1 to Yr6 and overseas students. This book collects award-winning compositions from Yr1 to Yr6, covering a wide range of subject matters and styles. These compositions are slightly shorter, suitable for juniors and overseas students to read. The guidelines introduced above also apply to this book.
